Making friends with Dementia at The Valley

The Valley are proud to have joined the large movement of Dementia Friends today.

With the help of The Alzheimer's Society and Dementia Friends Champion Elizabeth Green, they delivered an engaging and thought provoking workshop to our key retailers, guiding them to making their shops here at The Valley as dementia-friendly as possible and gaining their commitment to becoming Dementia Friends.

The workshop covered the Alzheimer's Society five key messages, that Dementia is not a natural part of ageing {1}, it's caused by diseases of the brain {2}, it's not just about losing your memory - it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks {3}, its possible to live well with dementia {4} and that there's more to a person than the dementia {5}.

Marketing Manager at The Valley, Phil Maclean, who attended the workshop said "In an ageing generation living longer, we recognise the importance of the Dementia Friends movement and want to work towards harnessing a shopping environment that welcomes both people that live with Dementia, their carers and their friends & families. We would like to thank Elizabeth for delivering such a positive workshop, and because of that we have all gone away with Dementia at the forefront of our minds".

A big thank you to the participating stores and restaurants who attended the workshop which include:

Evesham Garden Centre, Bessie & Boo, Mountain Warehouse, Cotswold Needlecraft, Absolute Silver, Pavers and Julian Charles.
